Old Wives Tales for Gender Prediction

Old Wives Tales for Gender Prediction

Today’s post is a little different than the usual, as you may have seen on my Instagram I’m expecting my second child right now. As you read this I’m only a couple of days of the 20 weeks mark and about to find out the gender of this little munchkin.  Of course, everyone in my life are starting to form teams, blue vs pink, and as you do when you’re pregnant I went on Pinterest and found tons of old wives tales for gender prediction. I thought it would be fun to try a few and see what they’re predicting and which ones will turned out to be right.

Chinese Calendar

The chinese gender predictor chart consider the month of conception and your age at the time. I was 28 years old (still am) and it was in april so the chart I used predicted A GIRL.

Here’s the link to the chart I used : https://www.thebump.com/chinese-gender-chart

Mayan Calendar

In the same idea of the chinese one, the mayan consider also the age and month of conception. Once again it predicted A GIRL.

Wedding Ring

The wedding ring test is a pretty popular and known one. You attach your wedding ring (or any ring really if you’re not married, the “tales” says it should be a meaningful ring for you) on a string, of course mine was attach on yarn! You hold the ring by the string over your belly and if the ring goes side to side it’s a boy and if it goes in circle it’s a girl. Mine was going in circle soi t predicted A GIRL.

There was a couple of tests concerning other person than the mother to determine the gender.

Dad Weight

It says that if the father of the baby is gaining weight the baby will be a girl and if it’s the same or less it’s gonna be a boy. My husband actually lost a few pounds since I got pregnant so this prediction says A BOY.

Previous Child Hairline

This test asks you to look at your previous child hairline at the base of the neck if the hair are pointed like a triangle it’s going to be the opposite sex of that child, if it’s more of a line it’s the same gender of the child. My daughter has her hair more pointed but her hairline at the base of her neck is pretty straight so I’ll go with A GIRL.

There is a couple of more medical related test to predict the gender.

Fetal Heart Rate

Ask your doctor or technician the heart rate of your baby and if it is 140 or less it’s more likely to me a boy and if it’s higher than 140 it’s more likely to be a girl. My baby’s heart rate was at 141 so this one also predicted A GIRL.

Early Scan Prediction

Depending on where you live you might not have an early scan but where I am (Montréal) you usually have a first scan between the 11 and 13th weeks of the pregnancy. They might tell you an assumption looking at the scan. In my case they said it might be a boy but definitely not clear enough to tell, especially since the technician told me the little thing she was looking at might be part of the leg. So we’ll say A BOY for that one.

Every single other test I looked at are all regarding pregnancy symptoms.

Cravings

There was two tests regarding the cravings. The first one said that if you are craving sweet you’re expecting a girl and if you’re craving salty it’s a boy. I had terrible nausea during the first trimester so my natural sweet tooth wanted salty things to help with the nausea. Now that my nausea is almost gone my sweet tooth is starting to come back but I’ll still say salty for this one so it’s saying A BOY.

The other test was either you’re craving fruits or meat, since I’m vegan I will say earthy high in protein stuff but anyway. Fruit is a prediction for a girl and meat/protein would be for a boy. Since the beginning I really want fruits all the time and funny enough si does my daughter! For this it’s A GIRL.

Skin

There was also two tests regarding the skin during the pregnancy. First one is about if your skin is clear or if you have breakouts. If you have breakouts the tales says that you’re having a girl and that she is stealing your beauty and if your skin is clear it’s a boy. I definitely have breakouts (thank you hormones…) so for this one it’s A GIRL.

The other test regards the rest of your skin on your body is it more smooth or more dry. Smooth skin is predicting a girl and dry skin a boy. I definitely have a smoother skin than before pregnancy so this time again it’s A GIRL.

Headaches

This pregnancy symptom is not a fun one if you have it. Lots of headaches is a prediction for a boy (or a prediction for the future headaches he’ll give you lol) and no headaches would indicate a girl. My head is often on fire so this one says A BOY.

Nausea and Morning Sickness

The most famous pregnancy symptom, ughh. Lots of nausea and morning sickness is a sign of a girl and little to no nausea would be for a boy. Like I said sooner, nauseas were terrible for me so this one is A GIRL.

Nose Size

Yes you read that right. Apparently some women can see their nose getting wider and bigger during pregnancy, I didn’t know that and it definitely was not a symptom for either of my pregnancies. A larger nose would be for a boy and since it didn’t happened to me it means it’s A GIRL.

Breast Size

Your breast size will of course change, especially near the end when your milk is starting to come, but this test is regarding early on during the first and second trimester. If your breast is starting to get bigger really quickly it’s a sign for a girl, if it’s slower and almost non-existent for this time of your pregnancy it’s a boy. Not changing my bra size yet, it’s A BOY.

Energy Level

Being pregnant is no piece of cake and your energy level might not be the same. This test supposed that if your energy is really low you’re expecting a girl because once again that little baby wants to steal your beauty apparently and if you’re energy level is good or high it’s supposed to be a little boy. Well, my energy is getting better but it’s still low so it’s A GIRL.

Carrying low or high

You probably heard people making prediction based on that all the time! If your baby bump i slow it’s supposed to be a boy and it’s high it’s a girl. My baby bump is more on the lower side as of right now, it did change a little during my last pregnancy, but as of right now it’s still low so it’s A BOY.

We’ve looked at 17 different gender prediction tests. 11 predicted a girl and 6 predicted a boy. So according to these I’m most likely to have a girl!! Make sure to come back in a couple of days to have the actual answer to that question and a brand new pattern for a cute little gender neutral baby hat.
